Banks electorate demands a fair return on gas
Our gas belongs to all of us. But a handful of corporations wrote themselves a deal that lets them take the profit and pay next to nothing - while families in the electorate of Banks can't get on top of the cost of living.
We're calling on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers to introduce a 25% gas exports tax - so this money finally works for the people who own it.
Our Labour federal representative Zhi Soon voted against introducing a 25% gas exports tax earlier this year.
Every signature adds to a growing, cross-party call for change. The more of us who add our name, the harder this is to ignore.

Australia Institute position
The gas export industry has been free riding off Australians for decades. When gas prices spike upwards, the Saudis, Qataris and Norwegians feel rich, making a fortune from their exports. But in Australia, Australians pay more for our own energy instead, while Australian governments give away most exported gas for free. A 25% gas export tax as proposed by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) would generate up to $17 billion per year. At present the PRRT generates less than $2 billion per year. The Australian Tax Office describes the gas industry as “systemic non-payers of tax”. Many gas companies pay no company tax and no PRRT. Santos Limited, for example, has not paid any company tax on $47 billion in sales over ten years. It's time that everyday Australians enjoy the benefits of our natural finite resources that belong to all of us.
